All My Photos Will Say "Take Off The Lens Cap"

adam-lens.jpgSeth Godin loves to talk about small and great things that fix stupid problems--problems that result from nothing more than tradition and not enough people asking something like "does it have to be that way?"

Today, he posts about a new lens cap that is transparent instead of black and says "Take Off The Lens Cap."

I'd be more excited about this product if I thought I would be any more likely to remember to take the cap off.  Instead of taking black images, now I'll just have the words "Take Off the Lens Cap" written on every photo I take!

In any case, my cap's off to the entrepreneur!

Its pretty good idea to have a transperant lense cap but there is a catch! When the lense is exposed to the direct sunlight it could possibly burn the circuits inside and loaded-film(if film SLR). Thats why camera makers generally advice people not to expose their lense to direct sunlight(in a way the sun, lense and its focal point are inline). And thats the reason why lense caps are in full-black-opaque.

The idea for a transparent camera lens cover causes you to slap your forehead and ask "why haven’t they been doing this for decades?" Black blends in with black, and therefore renders it almost invisible. This has ruined how many photos? Worse yet, how many memories has it seamlessly erased?

The purpose of having clear lens is so people remember to take it off, and having a transparent cover will undoubtedly help with that. But is it the A-#1 option? How about a neon green or a nice blue color? Nothing outrageous or flashy of course, just something people will really notice when they are looking down the barrel of the camera, and doing their pre picture taking routine (possibly a tab that sticks out?). I would also make the middle of the cover transparent and rectangular. On this clear rectangle would be the words HEY!! REMOVE! or DON’T FORGET ME!!. Now that’s something people could remember (because its so different).

You could also have two magnets in the lens cover. These magnets will engage a light or a sound, which will warn you that the lens cover is still on. Just an idea

Or you could use a digital camera. The minute you check back to see how the picture turned out, you'll know you need to redo it.
