Third Way to Get Money to Chase You: Find Mentors

The third way to get money to chase you is to find mentors.  The best mentors are those who have done exactly what you want to do.

Entrepreneurs often think about having a mentor, but I recommend seeking two or three, to get multiple perspectives.  In this way you can find advice on a broader range of issues.

gates.jpgTip:  You don't have to tell your mentors that they are mentors.  It may be easier to think of them as trusted friends.

Most successful people I know are willing to serve formally or informally as mentors.  Most, I think, would be willing to meet as frequently as once per month with additional contact via e-mail and an occassional phone calls.

What motivates a mentor is the idea that she can help someone else who is climbing a mountain she's already summitted.   A key to maintaining the relationship with a mentor is to actually take some of the advice she gives you--and let her know.

Given that you should take some of your mentors' advice,  be sure to choose people you respect.   You'll never want to take advice from someone you don't trust and no one wants to give counsel and advice and never have it taken.

The advice and network you can get from good mentors will get you closer to the money.

I appreciate your tips very much .
would you please give us some tips or suggestions that can help us find
mentors easily.
Though all the time I want find my teachers ,I feel it's difficult for me.

Bill,

Thanks for your thoughtful question. Perhaps your question is really the key.

I think finding the mentor comes largely from developing your network. As you get to know and know of people who are ahead of you on the entrepreneurial curve, you identify candidates. A question like, "would you mind meeting over breakfast or lunch about once a month to talk informally about entrepreneurship?" seems to be an easy way to ask for the favor--easier still if you offer to buy.

I'd be interested, Bill, if your experiences are any different in Asia.

I love this post. I am fortunate to have learned and benefited from the advice of some very high quality mentors (to your point, many wouldn't consider themselves my mentors, rather my friends). If we learn best by doing, but doing something with no experience to draw from yields very low success rates, bridging that gap with someone else’s experience makes all the sense in the world.
