The MoneyTree report, prepared in part by the National Venture Capital Association and Thompson Financial, shows total venture capital deals of $6.2 billion for the third quarter of 2006, up from $5.6 billion in the prior year, reflecting an increase of 10.7% over a year. In terms of the numbers deals, the increase was more modest (suggesting an increase in average deal size) showing 797 deals for the third quarter of 2006, compared to 771 deals for the prior year quarter, reflecting an increase of 3.4%.
In Utah, the increase was larger than the national average (but it is a bit unfair to compare a single quarter because there are relatively few deals in Utah and the totals vary dramatically as a result). For the third quarter of 2006, Utah reported eight deals with a total value of $53 million, compared with five deals with a total value of $30 million last year, indicating an increase of 60% in deals and 76.7% in deal value.
