I literally could not believe it. I still can't. Utah had a four point lead, meaning that BYU needed a touchdown and not just a fieldgoal, with barely over a one minute to play. Certainly the game was over. The celebration began as BYU began their last, pointless, desperate drive. But something happened on the way to the party--BYU won.
It's still a bity hazy in my mind, as I recall seeing the scoreboard reading 31-27 in favor of the home team with time expired at the end of the 4th quarter. All that had to happen was for BYU not to score after the clock ran out, but that was too much for my Utes.
Jon Beck proved that he is as good as his fans say he is, leading his team all the away across the field in barely over a minute to score the winning touchdown with time expired, making this one of the best games in BYU history--and one of my most painful memories. I'll never forget seeing Jonny Harline kneeling in the end zone, praying for that ball and the moment of stunned silence at Rice-Eccles field--broken only by the little Cougar roar from interloping BYU fans in the stadium.
So, to my friends Paul and Russell, where do you want to go to lunch?
I'd like to draw some meaningful conclusion, some insightful business lesson from all of this, but right now, my head still hurts too much!
