Seth Godin posts today about the importance of innovation in business--especially when compared with the disciplined traits required to, for instance, fly a plane.
Read his post here.
In my view, Seth uses some of the wrong language to describe the situation. Innovative people are more important to an organization now and in the future than people whose skills are in execution. In a world that is changing faster than ever, companies need intrapreneurs who can innovate to stay ahead of the competion.
That said, when one considers the required ratio innovators to executioners, I think the ratio would be somewhere in the range of 1:10 to 1:100. So, while they are more important, we need now and will always need more people who can execute than innovate.
Just a thought, piqued by Seth's post.
