This morning I had breakfast with Ben Kuo (who attended USC), the entrepreneur behind SoCalTech and TechRockies. I thought I'd give you a report on what I learned.
I think many entrepreneurs go through a stage where they ask themselves the question, "is this anything?"
Ben told me this morning (not bragging, only in answer to my query) how he knew that he was on to something.
He created a list of companies in Southern California where he thought he might want to work. He cavalierly decided to post the list on his personal web site. Once he did, he started getting emails with more information about these companies and then more info about other companies that should be added to the database.
After a time, he started sending out a newsletter to a few dozen people. The biggest milestone might have been when he received an offer from a reader to sponsor the site.
Building on that foundation of demand for his product, he built a business and shortly quit his job. He's now replicating the model literally around the world.
Do your customers want your product as badly as Ben's want his?
