Google's Acquisition Trail
Pete Abilla, a Utah blogger, has built an interesting little mashup that tracks the history of Google's acquisitions.google.gif

I've met and, you guessed it,  ate breakfast with Pete.  He's an interesting guy.

Google now has its own center of gravity.  Entrepreneurs are both focused on being worthy of Google's largess and afraid of being crushed into oblivion by it.

In any case, it's good to be Google, Inc. (Nasdaq: GOOG)

Google in Talks to Buy YouTube for $1.6 Billion
The Wall Street Journal reports that Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) is in Talks to buy YouTube for $1.6 billion.

This is an incredible story.  Started less than two years ago with relatively simple code, the creation of that kind of value is certainly reminiscent of those halcyon days in the late 1990s when a business plan could go public.

google.gifAs regular readers know, I'm fascinated by YouTube and by video on the web.  Clearly the convergence of television and the web is upon us.  How long will it be until we no longer distinguish between watching television and watching the web?  What will it mean for television networks?

The World is Changing - Faster (Will Google replace Microsoft?)
j0401942.jpgWith the recent introduction of Google Spreadsheets (see Fred Wilson's post) and the pending introduction of Vista, I wish to prodict a sea change, a seismic shift, a global change in the economy.

First, I have resisted the notion of on-line applications for wordprocessing and spreadsheets for years, since the idea was first conceived.  For one, I continue to be concerned about features and speed of operation.  That said, it is now happening.  Google is operating both an on-line wordprocessing application and a spreadsheet program that have some big file-sharing and collaboration advantages over desktop applications.

E-mail really created a world in which spreadsheet data was shared electronically instead of via the printed page.  This effectively forced everyone to use the same software.  Today, everyone I know runs Microsoft Excel.  Before e-mail, I remember using Lotus 1-2-3 (which I would still use today, but for the compatability issues).

If Google's wordprocessing and spreadsheet applications start to get real traction, because of their cost or other preceived benefits, file sharing will drive rapid adoption quickly through business networks.  I feel like the switch from one program to another will take three years, if it happens.  It could happen faster.

Google Finance Review

Google just launched its Google Finance pages.  I thought, as this is a finance oriented blog, that I should give you my first impressions.

logo_finance.gifThe coolest thing, and I do mean "cool," is the charting that integrates news links.  So you can click on an icon on the chart to see what news had been released around the time of the news event.

Looking at Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) chart, you can click on a link that takes you straight to the news released at the time.  So, you can see the release that led to a big slide, as when Google dropped almost 20% over several days after the company announced disappointing results.

You're In Good Company

no.jpgToday I took a client to talk to three different venture funds.  While none of the funds told us to hit the road and not let the door hit us on the way out, only one (thank heavens for the one) was genuinely encouraging about moving to "next steps."

This evening I read the Business Week Deal Flow blog post on Bessemer Venture Partners' recent addition to its web-site--its "anti-portfolio"--the companies it had the opportunity to invest in and didn't.  Their list includes little successes like:

    • Apple Computer
    • eBay
    • Federal Express
    • Google
    • Intel
    • Intuit
    • Paypal

Let's all remember to take a little comfort in the knowledge that even smart people sometimes guess wrong.  When an entrepreneur hears "no" from a venture capitalist, she's in good company!
