Jun28	UTC Announces Ballmer to Speak Devin Thorpe June 28, 2006 Know More: Executives, Microsoft, Organizations, Steve Ballmer, Utah Technology Council, Utah Technology Council According to Utah Business, Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) CEO Steve Ballmer will speak to the Utah Technology Council in October. UTC President Richard Nelson was quoted as saying: “Utah has such a spectacular industry of IT and life sciences companies that we feel they deserve a celebration event keynoted by the top CEO in the world,” said Richard Nelson, president and CEO of UTC. During the Hall of Fame event, UTC will induct Jim Kajiya of Microsoft and Dinesh Patel of vSpring Capital into its Hall of Fame. Now in its eighth year, the event will honor Kajiya as a representative of the information technology industry and Patel from the life sciences industry. As the Hall of Fame keynote speaker, Ballmer will address a crowd of 800 at the Little America Hotel. “This will sell out,” Nelson said. “We’ve been given a rare opportunity in hosting Steve Ballmer.” This is a real coup for the Utah Technology Council and for the State of Utah. Jun10	The World is Changing - Faster (Will Google replace Microsoft?) Devin Thorpe June 10, 2006 Know More: Google, Microsoft, Microsoft With the recent introduction of Google Spreadsheets (see Fred Wilson's post) and the pending introduction of Vista, I wish to prodict a sea change, a seismic shift, a global change in the economy. First, I have resisted the notion of on-line applications for wordprocessing and spreadsheets for years, since the idea was first conceived. For one, I continue to be concerned about features and speed of operation. That said, it is now happening. Google is operating both an on-line wordprocessing application and a spreadsheet program that have some big file-sharing and collaboration advantages over desktop applications. E-mail really created a world in which spreadsheet data was shared electronically instead of via the printed page. This effectively forced everyone to use the same software. Today, everyone I know runs Microsoft Excel. Before e-mail, I remember using Lotus 1-2-3 (which I would still use today, but for the compatability issues). If Google's wordprocessing and spreadsheet applications start to get real traction, because of their cost or other preceived benefits, file sharing will drive rapid adoption quickly through business networks. Mar23	Google Finance Review Devin Thorpe March 23, 2006 Know More: Companies, Google, Microsoft, Time Warner, Yahoo, Time Warner Google just launched its Google Finance pages. I thought, as this is a finance oriented blog, that I should give you my first impressions. The coolest thing, and I do mean "cool," is the charting that integrates news links. So you can click on an icon on the chart to see what news had been released around the time of the news event. Looking at Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) chart, you can click on a link that takes you straight to the news released at the time. So, you can see the release that led to a big slide, as when Google dropped almost 20% over several days after the company announced disappointing results.
