MoneyTree Report from PWC Shows Increase in VC Fundings

PricewaterhouseCoopers just released its quarterly MoneyTreeTM report of venture capital deals for the third quarter of 2006, showing a somewhat larger increase in deals than reported by VentureOne yesterday.

The MoneyTree report, prepared in part by the National Venture Capital Association and Thompson Financial, shows total venture capital deals of $6.2 billion for the third quarter of 2006, up from $5.6 billion in the prior year, reflecting an increase of 10.7% over a year.  In terms of the numbers deals, the increase was more modest (suggesting an increase in average deal size) showing 797 deals for the third quarter of 2006, compared to 771 deals for the prior year quarter, reflecting an increase of 3.4%.

nvca.jpgIn Utah, the increase was larger than the national average (but it is a bit unfair to compare a single quarter because there are relatively few deals in Utah and the totals vary dramatically as a result).  For the third quarter of 2006, Utah reported eight deals with a total value of $53 million, compared with five deals with a total value of $30 million last year, indicating an increase of 60% in deals and 76.7% in deal value.

MWCN Q2 Dealflow Report:

The MountainWest Capital Network today released its second quarter dealflow report today.  The report, as is customary, expands on the data released in the PricewaterhouseCoopers MoneyTree report.

Most importantly, the report includes data on mergers and acquisitions and suggests a healthy volume of deals in Utah during the second quarter, showing $1.2 billion in M&A transactions, up from $549 million in the first quarter, but down from $2.5 billion in the second quarter of 2005. 

MWCN_Q2_Done.jpgThe biggest deal of the quarter was the acquisition of vSpring's LANDesk by Avocent Corp (Nasdaq: AVCT) for $416 million.  Energy Solutions, a Utah-based company, acquired Duratek, Inc. for $396 million.  Our firm was involved in one of the smaller deals of the quarter, Pearson PLC's (LON: PSON) acquisition of Utah-based ELLIS (English Language Learnings Systems), Inc. (OTC: ELLG)
